A Quick Guide to Understanding Medical Insurance

At Henderson Mental Health, we believe that understanding your insurance should be stress-free. We’ve simplified it here to help you feel confident about your mental health care costs.

What Is Medical Insurance?

Medical insurance helps cover healthcare expenses. You pay a regular fee called a premium, and in return, your insurance company helps pay for medical services, including therapy and psychiatry appointments.

Meet Sarah: A Story About Navigating Mental Health Insurance

Sarah is seeking therapy to manage stress. Let’s walk through her insurance journey to make things clear and positive:

Premium: Sarah pays $150 per month to keep her insurance active.

Copays: Every time Sarah visits her therapist, she pays a small, fixed fee, $20 per session. However, some clients may have plans with no copays at all, making therapy even more accessible.

Deductible: Sarah’s plan has a $750 deductible, which means she pays the first $750 of her medical costs each year before insurance starts sharing costs. It’s important to note that some insurance plans don’t have deductibles, reducing upfront expenses.

Coinsurance: After meeting her deductible, Sarah shares costs with her insurance. For example, she covers 20% of the cost per session, and her insurance pays the remaining 80%. But in many cases, certain policies, like Medicaid, cover sessions fully with no out-of-pocket costs for the client.

Out-of-Pocket Maximum: Sarah’s yearly out-of-pocket maximum is $3,000. Once she pays this amount, her insurance covers 100% of her covered therapy sessions for the rest of the year. For some clients, their plans may have lower out-of-pocket maximums or even none at all, depending on their coverage.

Understanding your insurance can help you feel confident and encouraged to seek the support you need. Many clients discover that their therapy costs are fully or largely covered, removing financial barriers to their well-being.
